Ángela Gurría has created her own universe of space and matter using iron and stone. Other materials, such as cantera (quarry) and marble, are transformed into pieces charged with feeling and life when touched by this living legacy of sculpture. Up until now, most of her work had remained sheltered in museums and galleries. In true Morenita form, we open the door to privately-owned sculpture atriums for a most exclusive viewing of La Dama de la Escultura’s work.
A CDMX native, Ángela studied Spanish literature at UNAM and began her career as a sculptor in 1951, mentored by the great Germán Cueto, founder of the Academia de las Artes. During those early days, Angela had to sign up for competitions and exhibitions under the alias Alberto Urías, because at that time female artists were not eligible to win scholarships or enter contests. However, due to her great artistic talent, in 1973 she became the first woman to be part of the Academia.
Among her many awards, Angela won first place in the category "Sculpture integrated to Architecture" of the Third Sculpture Biennial, Gold Medal at the Art Academy of Lavoro (Italy) and National Prize of Arts and Sciences in the Fine Area Arts.
Despite being a symbol of monumental urban sculpture, Angela has also worked on smaller pieces that reflect her dreams and her great Mexican soul, creating works that exalt our pre-hispanic roots, which are available for purchase via the Morenita Private Art Tour.
Morenita Experience offers today’s global traveler never-before-seen access to the genius of Angela Gurria, the most important living female sculptor in Mexico, as well as other great masters such as Arno Avilés, Vicente Rojo and Antonio Chemor, through our CDMX luxury travel experiences, which are designed to delight & impress the most discerning art collectors.
