Why we begin on the lake
Lake Como & Milan

Most of our guests fly in overnight from the United States, and the first two or three days after a long-haul flight are rarely anyone's best. That is why we almost always open a Northern Italy journey on Lake Como rather than in Milan.

The lake is about an hour's drive from the airport, and it asks nothing of you. Water, mountains and centuries-old villages set a slower rhythm, the days are spent mostly outdoors and on the water, and dinner is never far from your room. By the time you leave, sleep is back to normal and you are ready for the city.

Lake Como — water & villas

Then the pace changes. Milan is Italy's capital of fashion, design and contemporary culture, and it rewards energy: galleries and foundations, ateliers you would never find on your own, long lunches, late dinners and a social life that starts around nine. Arriving rested is what lets you enjoy it fully.

Together the two form a balanced arc, beginning in restorative calm on the lake and building toward the richness of one of Europe's most dynamic cities.

Il Sereno — waterfront
Accommodations / Lake Como
Il Sereno

An intimate waterfront hotel with just a handful of suites, Il Sereno's contemporary, design-forward interiors are oriented to make the most of direct, uninterrupted views across Lake Como. Understated and quietly confident, it pairs a strong sense of place with the seclusion and personal service of a small property — a rare balance of privacy and easy access to the water.

Via Torrazza 10, 22020 Torno, Como · ilsereno.com
Accommodations / Milan
The Carlton, Milan

Set on the corner of Via della Spiga in the heart of the Quadrilatero della Moda, The Carlton is a walk-everywhere address — Brera, Montenapoleone and the great museums all within a few unhurried minutes. Behind a discreet façade, warm interiors and attentive, old-world service make it a calm, well-placed base from which to read the city.

Day One
Arrival on the lake
Day One
Lago di Como
Milan skyline · arrival
Afternoon · Arrival in Milan

The journey begins the moment you land. A private driver meets you at the airport and turns north, out of the city and toward the water, about an hour's drive as Milan's industry loosens into the first silver line of the lake. From here on, everything is taken care of.

Il Sereno · penthouse bedroom
Check-in at Il Sereno

An intimate waterfront hotel of just a handful of suites, its contemporary interiors turned fully toward the lake. There is nothing on the agenda but to arrive — unpack slowly, find the terrace, and let the first afternoon be about the view and little else.

Day One
Lago di Como
Sunset · Aperitivo on the hotel terrace

Just off the lobby, the bar opens onto a panoramic terrace with an uninterrupted view of the water — the ideal setting for a first, unhurried drink as the light goes gold. The cocktail list borrows from the hotel's vertical botanical garden, so ask what's in season and let the barman surprise you.

Il Sereno · terrace
Hotel restaurant · dining room
One Michelin star, inside the hotel
Evening · Dinner at the hotel

The hotel's signature table is led by a Naples-born chef, its stone-and-wood dining room set right at the water's edge. Dinner unfolds across a considered tasting menu built on raw, local and seasonal ingredients, paired with regional wines, a quiet, luminous welcome to the days ahead. After a long flight, a first dinner a few steps from your room is exactly what you want.

Day Two
Como from the water
Day Two
Lago di Como
Lake Como · Venetian Limousine
Hotel breakfast at leisure
Morning · Como from the water

Your introduction to the lake, made properly — from the deck of a Venetian Limousine. The captain heads north past Villa Pliniana, Clooney's Villa Oleandra and the Tremezzina shore. Como is shaped like an upside-down "Y", and this western branch is the storied one: centuries of villas, terraced gardens and grand facades that have drawn nobility, artists and Hollywood in equal measure.

Villa del Balbianello · terrace
Guided visit
Late morning · Villa del Balbianello

One of the most cinematic properties in Italy — the gardens of Count Guido Monzino, familiar from Casino Royale and Star Wars. Perched on a wooded promontory with the lake wrapping around three sides, Balbianello offers the single most breathtaking panorama on Como, and the perfect note on which to set the tone for the week.

Day Two
Lago di Como
Lakeside lunch
Midday · Lunch across the water

Tucked into a tiny lakefront piazza just a short glide across the water from Balbianello, this family-run trattoria takes its name from the traditional trolling line local fishermen use on the lake. You'll step off the boat and straight to your table, where handmade pastas and just-caught lake fish arrive against a postcard view of Isola Comacina. It's slow, sun-drenched, quintessentially Lake Como — lunch the way Italians have always known to do it.

The scenic way home

The final leg loops back down the lake toward Torno — a parting look at the shoreline from the water, having covered Como's most beautiful stretches in a single afternoon. An open afternoon outdoors like this is the best cure for jet lag. Back at the dock, the rest of the day is yours, and an optional spa treatment is a fine way to spend it.

Day Two
Lago di Como
Il Sereno spa · treatment room
Optional · at the hotel
Late afternoon · Spa Treatments

The spa at Il Sereno occupies the hotel's historic boathouse, reimagined with contemporary interiors, and partners exclusively with Swiss skincare house Valmont for its cellular cosmetics and anti-aging facials, alongside massages and rejuvenating body treatments. The standout feature is the outdoor relaxation area with a pool built directly over the waters of Como, complemented by a sauna and steam room finished in Italian tiles.

Il Sereno · wine cellar
Il Sereno
Optional Aperitivo in the cellar

Before dinner, pause for a glass in Il Sereno's cellar — an intimate, low-lit room beneath the hotel, stocked with a thoughtfully chosen run of Italian labels. The gentlest way to ease from a day on the water into the evening.

Day Two
Lago di Como
Terrace in Torno
Evening · Dinner in the village

In the heart of Torno's old village, a brief walk from the hotel, dinner is at a family-run institution and a genuine local landmark. Its tree-shaded terrace sits almost on the water, and the kitchen keeps to traditional Como and Lombard cooking built around fresh lake fish — the perfect low-key counterpoint to a day spent on the lake.

Day Three
Classic cars, Bellagio and Como
Day Three
Lago di Como
La Vintage Dolce Vita · chauffeured classics
Hotel breakfast at leisure
Morning · La Vintage Dolce Vita

The morning unfolds from behind the wheel of two chauffeured classics, tracing the lake's panoramic roads toward Bellagio — a scenic drive worth slowing down for. The return to Como's historic center is unhurried: a stroll through Bellagio if the mood strikes, and a few good stories from your drivers along the way.

Artists' atelier · Bellagio
Watercolor, silk or clay
Bellagio · A private art session

The morning's destination is a private, bespoke session with two local artists — watercolor en plein air with the lake before you, silk printing in the Como tradition, or polychrome clay. Held at their atelier or in the gardens of a neoclassical villa on Bellagio's waterfront, adapted to the family, and you leave with a finished piece in hand.

Day Three
Lago di Como
Como · old town waterfront
Midday · Lunch in Como's old town

The kind of place locals guard jealously — a tiny, family-run osteria where the day's menu is handwritten and the cooking is honest and humble. Fresh pastas, lake fish, and seasonal dishes paired with nice wines. Afterward, you're perfectly placed to self-explore the surrounding pedestrian lanes, where Como's silk ateliers and Italian boutiques await. Our Lake Como shopping guide accompanies every itinerary.

Day Three
Lago di Como
Floating pool bar
Sunset · Aperitivo by the floating pool

At the water's edge of a neighboring hotel's lush botanical park, the lakeside bar is aperitivo hour perfected — signature cocktails served beside the lake's only floating pool, suspended right on the water. As golden hour settles in, the western shore ignites across the lake and the mountains soften to silhouette, all best admired with a spritz in hand.

Candlelit terrace
Evening · Dinner on a candlelit terrace

Directly across the water from Il Sereno, a small restaurant sits so close to the lake you could trail your fingers in it from the table. The same water taxi carries you across still evening water to this intimate candlelit terrace, where delicate crudos, fresh lake fish, and seafood pastas taste like the water they came from.

Day Four
From the lake to Milan
Day Four
Como → Milano
Hotel breakfast at leisure
Late morning · Transfer to Milan

One final, slow breakfast on the terrace before the lake lets you go. Luggage is collected; a private car makes the fifty-minute run down to Milan and to The Carlton — a walk-everywhere address in the heart of the Quadrilatero.

Il Sereno · final morning
The Carlton · Milan
Your Milan base on Via della Spiga
The Carlton, Milan

Behind a discreet facade on Via della Spiga, warm interiors and old-world service make The Carlton a calm, exactly-placed home for the Milan days — Brera, Montenapoleone and the great museums all a few unhurried minutes on foot. Drop your luggage and step out to explore the neighborhood.

Day Four
Milano
Quadrilatero della Moda
An afternoon of shopping
Self-Explore Quadrilatero

Step out of the hotel and you're directly on Via della Spiga, the pedestrian heart of the Quadrilatero della Moda — Milan's legendary fashion district. Our Milan shopping guide accompanies every itinerary, covering where flagship boutiques sit alongside historic ateliers and jewelry houses. It's the quintessential Milanese ritual: unhurried browsing, impeccable window displays, and a pause for espresso among the city's most stylish crowd.

Lunch in the Quadrilatero
Inside a former seminary
Midday · Lunch in the Quadrilatero

Tucked inside a spectacular former seminary, this is one of the Quadrilatero's most coveted tables. The kitchen serves seasonal Italian cuisine built around conviviality and recognizable, comforting flavors, enjoyed in elegant interiors or the leafy garden colonnade. It's the perfect stylish yet relaxed pause between boutiques, just steps from the shopping streets.

Day Four
Milano
10 Corso Como · entrance
The world's original concept store
Afternoon · 10 Corso Como

Here retail is treated as culture. Founded as a gallery and bookshop before growing into fashion, design, and food under one roof, it's widely credited as the world's original concept store, the template every "lifestyle retail" space since has borrowed from. 10 Corso Como was fully reimagined in 2024, and now holds the exclusive Italian distribution of Phoebe Philo's ready-to-wear, so the pioneering spirit is intact even if the bazaar-like original interior isn't.

Seafood house · Montenapoleone
A short walk from The Carlton
Evening · Dinner in the fashion district

In the heart of the fashion district, dinner is at the city's definitive seafood house. The kitchen's signatures — king crab al vapore, scampi crudo, spaghettoni with sea urchin — are served in a room that hums with the city's best-dressed crowd. Note that the restaurant keeps a dress code for men: a jacket is expected, and sneakers or shorts are politely turned away.

Day Five
Contemporary art and a collector's walls
Day Five
Milano
Fondazione Prada
Hotel breakfast at leisure
Morning · Contemporary art, guided by Cristina Lugo

Begin at an independent gallery in the city centre with a sharply curated program of emerging and mid-career Italian and international artists, spanning painting, photography and installation.

Continue on to Fondazione Prada, the Rem Koolhaas-designed campus founded by Miuccia Prada. Pause for an espresso at the campus café designed by filmmaker Wes Anderson.

Artist duo · installation
Inside the artists' working space
Late morning · Studio visit with an artist duo

A private visit to the Milan studio of two artists who have worked as a single voice for over a decade. Their sculptures and installations are built from what the city discards — industrial tubing, cable, salvaged metal, fragments of construction — reassembled into forms that hang, lean and balance with unexpected grace, and often sited inside abandoned or unfinished buildings. In the studio you see the work mid-process, hear how a found object becomes a sculpture, and understand why their practice is followed closely by collectors and institutions in Italy and beyond.

Day Five
Milano
Farmhouse courtyard
Kitchen garden
Behind Porta Romana
Midday · Lunch at a farmhouse in the city

Lunch is at a restored 17th-century farmhouse hidden behind Porta Romana — a working courtyard with a kitchen garden, artisan workshops, and a trattoria that cooks seasonal, market-driven Italian food. Lunch here is unhurried and genuinely local: fresh pastas and vegetables from small Lombard producers, served under the porticoes of one of the last farmsteads left inside the city.

Day Five
Milano
Aperitivo in a gallerist's apartment
A surprise, arranged privately
Sunset · Aperitivo inside a gallerist's home

Before dinner, the gallerist from the morning's visit opens the door to her own apartment for an aperitivo over champagne, and shows you the works she keeps for herself and why. Nothing on the walls is for sale; the conversation is about what a life spent looking at art teaches you to live with. This kind of access is a regular part of how Cristina approaches contemporary art, through her art advisory network.

Milanese institution
A Milanese institution since 1958
Evening · Dinner at a Milanese institution

This is where the city's fashion and publishing worlds come for seafood — spaghetti with lobster, fritto misto, and a trolley of whole fish presented tableside. The room keeps its old-world charm: green-panelled walls, cement-tile floors, and waiters who have been there for decades.

Day Six
Craft, light and a night at the opera
Day Six
Milano
Tailoring atelier · Milan
Hotel breakfast at leisure
A tailoring dynasty, run by a woman
Morning · Meet a Milanese woman tailor

She continues her father's atelier legacy — founded in 1967 after his three decades of training. Every garment is still cut and hand-sewn on-site, with no machines or computer patterns involved, and the house takes women's bespoke as seriously as men's. A rare case of a Milanese tailoring dynasty now run entirely by a woman.

Long-exposure · Milan at dusk
A private workshop as the light turns
Late morning · Long Exposure Photography Experience
With an acclaimed Milanese fine-art photographer

Join an acclaimed Milanese fine-art photographer, whose long-exposure work has been exhibited internationally and is celebrated for transforming architecture into pure motion, for a private workshop in one of the city's most photogenic settings. You learn the techniques behind her signature style: extended exposures, intentional camera movement, and the interplay of fading sky and emerging city light.

Day Six
Milano
Teatro alla Scala · auditorium
Red velvet and gilt, since 1778
Early evening · A performance at Teatro alla Scala

Seats in a box at Teatro alla Scala, the house where Verdi and Puccini premiered and where Toscanini, Callas and Pavarotti made their names. Six tiers of red velvet and gold rise around the stalls beneath a single chandelier; the programme depends on the season, so you will see whatever opera, ballet or concert is on the bill that night. An interval glass in the foyer, then a short walk to dinner.

Old Milanese trattoria
One of Milan's oldest restaurants
Late evening · Dinner at a centuries-old trattoria

Dinner is at a trattoria that has occupied the same address since a wayside inn stood there in 1722. The menu holds to the old repertoire — cassoeula, ossobuco, risotto giallo, cotoletta — cooked the way Milanese nonnas made it. Seating includes a covered courtyard that once housed the trattoria's bowling club, and decades of photographs from regulars who've eaten here across generations.

Day Seven
Vintage, scent and a Brera villa
Day Seven
Milano
Hotel breakfast at leisure
Walking & shopping tour
Morning · Vintage Treasures Shopping Experience
With a Milanese fashion historian and slow-fashion advocate

A Milanese fashion historian and slow-fashion advocate hosts a walking and shopping tour through the city's best luxury vintage, beginning a short walk from the hotel. The route winds through his favorite addresses — archive pieces from the great Italian and French houses alongside wearable, in-season finds — with the stories of the houses and their eras told along the way.

In the park
Lunch at leisure

Lunch is left open. The design museum's garden-floor restaurant has tables spilling into the park, no ticket or reservation required. If the weather is good, an informal pavilion bar a short walk into Parco Sempione sets tables under the trees, with a simple menu of pastas, salads, and sandwiches.

Vintage boutique · Milan
Parco Sempione
Day Seven
Milano
Perfume laboratory · Navigli
Perfume laboratory interior
Private session inside a working perfume laboratory
Afternoon · The Perfumer’s Atelier

An afternoon inside a working perfume laboratory tucked within a hotel entirely devoted to scent, where the building’s own history as a perfume factory is still very much alive. Guided by an in-house expert through a private session, you move through dozens of fragrances and their raw materials, learning how each was built note by note by the perfumers behind them — then take home a dropper of your own blend as a keepsake of the afternoon.

Day Seven
Milano
Navigli at sunset
A hidden bar, by invitation only
Sunset · Aperitivo at a speakeasy near the Navigli

As the canals turn gold, slip away from the crowds along the water to a bar with no sign and no address to look up: the door is unmarked, and entry is by a card that passes from hand to hand. Inside, a small, lamplit room of velvet, dark wood and vintage bottles, with barely a dozen seats. The cocktails are built around Italian bitters and vermouths, served slowly and without hurry. It is widely considered the most secret bar in the city, and the right prelude to the evening.

Brera villa
Once home to the Versaces
Evening · Dinner at a private members' club

Set inside a 20,000-square-foot Brera villa once home to the Versaces, the club's dining rooms range from a Japanese counter and bar to an open-air rooftop. Interiors mix pink-lacquered walnut wood and travertine, with an art collection spanning Warhol to contemporary photography. The evening unfolds among Milan's fashion and finance set, in a room built for quiet conversation rather than spectacle.

Day Eight
Architecture, design, fashion and a farewell
Day Eight
Milano
Hotel breakfast at leisure
Late morning · Villa Necchi Campiglio, guided
Via Mozart 14

The morning is yours. Villa Necchi Campiglio is Piero Portaluppi's 1930s Rationalist masterwork — built for the industrial/noble family with a heated pool, private elevator, and intercoms that were radical for their time. The interiors, left largely intact and now under institutional care, preserve original art and Portaluppi's signature geometric details. It's the rare Milan landmark that's both architecturally significant and quiet — a full sensory step out of the city center without ever leaving.

Afterward, lunch is served by the pool in the garden.

Villa Necchi Campiglio · veranda
Villa Necchi Campiglio · pool
Day Eight
Milano
Triennale Milano
The home of Italian design
Afternoon · Triennale Milano

Triennale has shaped the conversation around Italian design since 1923. The temporary exhibitions change with the season, so you will see whatever is on view during your visit, while downstairs the Museo del Design Italiano lays out the canon that made Milan the reference point for the discipline: 400 objects from the 1920s through the 2000s.

Armani/Silos · Tortona
A privately guided visit in Tortona
Late afternoon · Armani / Silos

Step into the world of Giorgio Armani with a privately guided tour of Armani/Silos, the designer's four-story museum housed in a converted 1950s granary in Tortona (the design district where the modeling agencies live). Explore decades of Armani's most iconic creations — from the unstructured jackets that redefined modern tailoring to the red-carpet gowns worn by Hollywood's greatest stars.

Day Eight
Milano
Farewell dinner · the kitchen table
Evening · Farewell dinner at the friends' table

The week closes with dinner inside the kitchen of an acclaimed Milanese restaurant. Not the private dining room: an actual table set up in the kitchen while the restaurant is in full service, with the brigade at work around you. The chef-owner hosts the evening personally and has curated a playlist of vintage vinyls for the occasion, so you will be eating a truffled risotto to the sound of Jim Morrison and The Doors. A fitting last table for the trip.

Nightcap · neon
After dinner · Nightcap at a Milanese classic

This bar has poured drinks from the same corner since 1947 and is the natural landing spot after a late dinner. It is the birthplace of the Negroni Sbagliato, invented here in the late 1960s/70s when the founder reached for prosecco instead of gin by mistake, and it's still served in the oversized chalice glasses he designed himself. Little has changed since — bow-tied waiters, red curtains, chandeliers — making it a piece of Milanese drinking history to end the trip on.

Day Nine
Partenza
Day Nine
Milano Partenza
A last Milan morning
Morning · A farewell breakfast

Your last morning is left unstructured, with time for a final espresso, a last walk through the neighborhood, or simply to pack at your own pace. When it is time, a private transfer takes you to the airport for a smooth, unhurried departure.
